Advent in Mondsee: traditional Advent Market in one of Austria’s most beautiful regions
The Advent Market in Mondsee maintains the traditional spirit of celebrating the time before Christmas in Austria. Over the years the market has become more and more attractive for locals as well as for visitors. Seasonal events such as carol concerts, biblical plays and the rediscovery of almost disappeared customs present true Christmas spirit. Right in the centre of Mondsee’s historical ambience just in front of the famous cathedral (well known from the movie “Sound of Music” - the Captain and Maria’s wedding scene was shot inside the cathedral) a unique location for the “Advent in Mondsee” has been found. In combination with the ancient cloister and the flower yard of the former monastery the whole ensemble gives the visitors the feeling of travelling into a dated back century.
Mondsee at its best
Every weekend in Advent handicraft, needlework and local gastronomic specialities are exhibited and can be acquired by the visitors. A must to see are the hand-carved nativity sets, hand painted Christmas tree decorations, ovine milk soaps and candles made of beeswax. Associations for the preservation of local customs display their every day work like gilded bonnets, pinfeather stitched wallets and wood-fired pottery.
One highlight every day
The most exciting event is the “Perchtenlauf” taking part at the 29th of November. Local youngsters disguise themselves as horrible figures out from hell to dispel the winter ghosts and awake the nature from winter sleep. A nice event for children takes part on the 19th of December at the lakeside. The “Christbaumtauchen” (dipping a Christmas tree) is a very thrilling performance by the local water rescue organisation. The programme is completed by meditation sessions in the cathedral, performances of local music groups and every now and then a concert with “Dixie-sound” will take part.
Mondsee’s beautiful landscape and a large selection of regional events are a perfect whereabout for combining nature with culture.
Only within a stone’s throw away from the festival city of Salzburg and right at the entry of the Salt-chamber region, Mondsee is the ideal place to spend a wonderful time during Christmas.
